Peter Symonds College in Winchester contacted accredited Thor Helical Remedial installers, Safeguard Hampshire to provide a suitable structural repair solution to an ongoing problem they were experiencing with cracking over window openings in the Theatre building within the campus. The large openings were constructed from shallow brick arches and have subsequently had replacement window frames installed which do not offer the same structural support as the new UPVC casements.
Subsequently, cracks appeared above the openings and engineers have undertaken monitoring to assess whether this was an initial consequence of the window replacement or an ongoing progressive issue.
It has been demonstrated that the movement is ongoing and as such, immediate repairs were considered necessary. Thor Helical Remedial Engineers were asked to prepare a scheme for these repairs which resolved the issues but were able to be completed within a very short period of time as the works have to be completed outside of teaching time to minimise disruption and to ensure the safety of the students attending the college.
There are six affected openings in total and it was decided that a masonry beam would be the most appropriate way of rectifying the dropping arches. The soldier courses would then be ties into the beam to provide a complete repair. The works will be completed by trained installers during the half term holiday week and will be completed by Friday to ensure the College can re-open on Monday to its students.
